Weekly Edit: Marks & Spencer AW14

So a couple of weeks ago I got an exciting email from Oxford Street, telling me that I had won their prize draw for London Fashion Weekend tickets to Marks & Spencer AW14 show. I hadn't expected to have much of a chance of winning, when I typed out my details for the prize draw. To say that I was stunned and shocked would be an understatement.

Even though I had to wake up at six in the morning to allow myself plenty of time to get to the 10am show, I thoroughly enjoyed spending the day alongside my bestie (the prize allowed a plus one). If you check out my tweets for that day, you'll have seen the goodies bag we got from the show too.

There were a lot of moments throughout the show when I was mentally noting down which pieces to look out for, when I went to shop in M&S. There were tons of layering ideas, colours that the monochromatic side of my style wouldn't have thought of mixing during the colder months and of course, coats that actually made me look forward to winter. 

Feel free to slow down, pause and stare at the video. My attempts at taking photos using my iPhone, failed miserably. Although I wasn't complaining that I didn't bring along my DSLR, when I had gained 3 extra bags by the end of the day.

Weekly Edit: Bared for all

Much of today has been spent alternating between lying on the sofa prodding my i-devices (iPhone and iPad) and watching my YouTube subscriptions on my new laptop. I am steadily running out of options on how to procrastinate whilst waiting for uni to start. The latter half of the day was basically me getting really into Frozen karaokes, singing as Anna with various covers of Hans in "Love is an Open Door", on YouTube.

So with the explanation of my schedule, you now know who's the culprit for YouTube view spikes. Other than that, I have been progressive with my emails and have finally been able to send off ticket requests for London Fashion Week (it's nearly here). With less than a week to go, I'm planning to publish outfit sets that could be an inspiration for what I'll be wearing when I head out to Somerset House. Below is the start, and if I had the budget I would seriously consider getting that Burberry poncho, like seriously.

Weekly Edit: Amanda Wakeley Pre-Fall Collection

A new week has begun and shops are packed full of anxious parents and children getting ready for the new school year. Among all the stress building up in the air, I'm pretty calm and at times excited at the mention of uni, which is just under a month away. So along with the end of summer holidays (for the rest of the country anyway), comes the much anticipated London Fashion Week. I'm planning to pop over to Somerset House on one of the days, to soak in the atmosphere and submerge myself within the sea of expected street stylists.

If you haven't already noticed, I've been concentrating the Weekly Edits on British or based-in-Britain designers. Since beginning this, it has opened my eyes to the amount of British designers and the different styles each offers. Today's edit will feature Amanda Wakeley, more specifically her Pre-Fall collection. Her name is constantly popping up on my LFWeekend emails and I've been waiting to feature her Pre-Fall collection for this year. So let's get going.

Weekly Edit: If money wasn't a limit...

So if you have been reading up on last week's edit, you would have known that I got my firm choice of uni. With this momentous upcoming step, my mind has been filled with ways to prepare, equipment to be bought and train fares. However, summer holidays has yet to leave me for another month, which ultimately means..more shopping time! Although, this time I'm searching for one particular item (ahem, have a look below). Yes, a bag but not just any bag, this accessory has many requirements to meet to be able to qualify for my ideal uni bag.

That's why I still haven't found it. The first aspect; is the size, it needs to fit my iPad, a couple of textbooks and sketchbooks, stationery, a water bottle, etc. The second point is a sturdy shoulder strap, having to possibly rush through crowds and up and down stairs at rush hour, lugging a heavy bag with short handles is definitely not ideal. Next, it needs to be multi-purpose (read: not a high-school backpack). I know I'm going to be spending a considerable sum of money on this, so I want to be able to use this outside of uni hours, therefore it has to be in a colour that will go with everything. Leather. I want it to be made of leather, good quality, last forever (or at least a few years) leather. Finally (phew, never thought we'd reach here) the price, I'm still a student and living off my parents, I can't go all out on designer gear (which is precisely why my local TK Maxx, has seen my face on their CCTV a lot recently). However if it is leather goods, I know to expect a high price tag, so if all the other conditions are met and it is made of leather, the budget is £50 (if it isn't leather, the budget is just about £20).

The above carousel of designer goods, are currently out of my league, but I picked them based on their forms. I love structured bags, it gives a sense of character to it and makes it seem more high-end and business-woman. It can bring a whole outfit together, great for those days when I forget to set the alarm and perfect plans go out the gap in the window that I left open last night. Turning early morning disasters into rolled-out-of-bed-like-this chic.

Weekly Edit: Nicholas Oakwell Couture SS14

The last half of the past week has been filled with celebration for firstly passing my driving theory test and then getting into my first choice of university, Central Saint Martins. I have literally been skipping around the house and seeing what I need to prepare for uni (seeing as I am staying at home). The whole excitement has lead my schedule askew, so my posts have been kind of off (like today). So without further ado, let's kickstart the week with an edit on Nicholas Oakwell.

Nicholas Oakwell Couture is a "London based British Couture House". This designer first came to my attention through an email about Vodafone London Fashion Weekend, as the British Couture House will be showing as part of the Designer Catwalk shows. The intricacy of the appliqué and embroidery used in their SS14 collection is simply awe-inducing, it adds a sense of romanticism and enhances the waistline. One would think that white would wash out the skin tone and increase the look of our figures but, the clever use of semi-sheer materials and bare shoulders, offsets the colour and personally I believe it makes more of a statement than your trusty little black dress (like a dove amongst a crowd of crows). However, if all white is still daunting, the designer has incorporated coloured embellishments to a couple of the designs which certainly carries a more playful tone. The models' slicked back do's provide the necessary simplicity to balance the impact of the dress, while minimal eye makeup and dark red lips create a sensual and dare I say vampiric mood. I thoroughly enjoyed this collection and cannot wait for his next set.

Weekly Edit: Temperley London Pre Fall 14

Having had a browse through Temperley London's Pre Fall 14 collection, I am entranced by the eclectic mix of colours. From bright fuchsias to army greens, even though it seems to be an odd combination in words, it is a wonderful ensemble to behold. The variations in the designs are connected through the impact each individual piece brings. I cannot decide whether it is either the bold prints and embroidery or the intricate simplicity (contradictingly so) in its structure that draws me to the them. What I am thinking now, is the thought that someone's overdraft is screaming to be used.

Weekly Edit: Monika Csutak SS14

Recently I checked into my Covet fashion app and came across a London-based designer, Monika Csutak. What drew me in even more, is the fact that her designs are made in the UK, this essentially means it is supporting the British fashion industry. It's reassuring to know that your clothes haven't got more air miles than all your holidays added up, to get to your wardrobe.

So to start the week off, I picked out three of my favourite designs from Monika Csutak's SS14 collection. I love the limited palette that she's used, which complement the elegant, yet playful cut of the pieces. It was so challenging to skim the choices down to three, which is why you have to see for yourselves to get the feel of the entire collection.

D152 | Doubled Silk dress

I found the hip (almost waist) -high faux split visually entrancing, because it offers the advantages of having a split that elongates your legs, but at the same time, the hidden skirt keeps it sophisticatedly chic. This is business at the front and back, party at the sides.

Given that the model's legs are fairly long already, what makes them seem even longer is the high-low hem of the design. The front panels naturally draw your eyes upwards, accentuating the length of her legs. The narrowed parting also slims the look of her legs even further, as you can only focus on that amount.

This last piece is actually two pieces, but I really wanted you to see this combination. There are a few focal points in this outfit, but they all complement each other without individually competing for attention.
Let's begin with the top. First of has to be the puffy sleeves, they exude a ladylike nature and because they are slightly translucent and tapered, they make your arms seem toned due to the shadows and fitted cuffs. Next is the slim V-neckline, it is not wide or long enough to be considered as revealing, but does its job well in seemingly lengthening your neck. The flared hem of the top makes your waistline smaller because it's wider at the bottom, which means it's perfect as a crop top.
The skirt again has a flared hem with the same outcome (no need to change when it's working like a charm), your legs look instantly slimmer and longer. The fabric itself drapes gently along your bottom half, this is great for those of you who have straighter figures, as it will bring out your curves.

Monika Csutak's SS14 collection is one of those that I would often like to peruse, whilst chilling out with a glass of elderflower cordial.

Weekly Edit: 5 Coats I want from Mango's New Collection

For the first time in a long while, I allowed my cursor to click into the "New Collection" tab on Mango's online site (I think my purse just went into hiding). This whole banning myself from entering anything other than the sales part of a store, was ingrained into my mindset since I was little, by my bargain-hunter parents. So my venturing into this unknown territory, was slightly daunting to say the least. I had to refrain from pressing the "sort by ascending order" button, and just basically let myself run wild (of course, this was purely for research and not shopping).

From that research, I picked out five coats from Mango's New Collection (I'm preparing for winter..) that made me wish that money really did grow on trees. I would definitely recommend you guys book out a solid hour, to have a long, dedicated look.

Weekly Edit: Zara LOOKBOOK - Woman April

I am so ecstatic about finding Zara's April Lookbook for Woman. I came across this whilst browsing their sale lines. My latest fad has brought me to loving clean silhouettes and minimalistic palettes. What has really captured me in this particular pictorial, are the seemingly effortless styling and how the use of one tone highlights the details in the designs. It doesn't assault your eyes with blinding prints and bold statements, demanding you to focus on both at the same time. Instead its relaxed and tranquil form, gives us a breather.

Weekly Edit: Blogger Feature

If you guys don't already know my obsession for all things DIY, you now know. With trends going in and out, season after season, my budget just can't keep up. So I've had to resort to making my own version of that "oh so trendy" skirt, bag, top, etc, etc. Even though it's ever so rewarding when I can wear my own creation, sometimes my creativity can only take me so far before it says "no". That's when I turn to the many DIY bloggers bookmarked on my Safari page, they never fail to feed my brain with endless amounts of options to tackle the imaginative block in my head. Having used their knowledge time after time, I thought I should shine a floodlight (a spotlight would not cover the expanse of their work) on their blog, and hopefully you'll be inspired too.

The blog I've decided to feature is...

From posts about travel to inspiring photos and my personal favourite, the DIY PROJECTS, A Pair & A Spare (AP&AS) is a blog founded by Geneva Vanderzeil. With clear instructions and photos that made me rethink the composition of my own, it's a blog that I would happily spend hours sitting and scrolling. The layout of the blog is also another aspect that has me sighing in contentment, my eyes often start to hurt when looking at busy pages with all sorts of stuff lying around, I can tell you that AP&AS is not one of those. The white background and easily-located tabs, all contribute towards the calming atmosphere of the blog.

My Favourite DIY...

I should probably mention that this is my favourite DIY for the moment, seeing as I'm always changing my mind when another one turns up. I love the DIY TRANSPARENT SATCHEL, what first captured my attention was the use of PVC as a material. I found it intriguing as it was a new take on the traditional satchel. Furthermore, the idea of using studs as a way of securing the bag together, meant that this was a DIY capable for newbies and beginners. Unfortunately, I have not yet started on this morsel of goodness, because it is amazingly hard to track down PVC that is the right thickness and also fits my very, very small budget. I'm still on a lookout and seriously hopes that someday soon this DIY bag will be part of my wardrobe.

Weekly Edit: What I Wore to Prom

It was that momentous time again last week, the day that many girls dream of (aside from their wedding) and plan their outfits months ahead for. Yes, it was Prom. Our end of 6th Form (or High School for those of you in the US) Prom. Seeing as I was part of the committee planning the event, I had about 2 months advanced notice on top of the first announcement that it was happening. So I bought my outfit about 4 months prior.

Today I decided to show you what I wore, the makeup I went for and the hairstyle I picked.

Almost everything had to be prepared on the day as there was no other option. Like my jumpsuit for starters, I could only iron it hours before my Prom as I didn't want the garment creasing (thank goodness the fabric was fairly hard to crease). I prepped my hair with mousse early in the afternoon, to allow time for it to air dry and because my Prom didn't start until 7.30pm. My nails were done the day before, pushed for time since I had to update the blog too (my toenails only had a couple coats of black nail varnish and was painted on the day). My hair was curled at around 3 o'clock by my mum, we used a 38mm curling iron.

By the time my hair was done and my garment half-way ironed, I realised I had left myself around 10 mins to get casually dressed to head down to town for my makeup session (I was still in my pjs). When I knew I would be 5 minutes late, I called them up to let them know I'm on my way. Only to find out that they had been intending to call me but had no form of contact, about half-an-hour before stores close that their manager/makeup artist had left early because they weren't feeling well. Fair enough, was there a replacement? No. To say I was stressed was an understatement. They had left me 30 minutes to find another makeup artist, as compensation, they promised a free gift next time I went into their stores (freebies are awesome but it wasn't what I needed). I rushed into Boots and headed to their No7 counter and whilst breathing heavily, explained my situation and hoped for the best that they could save my night. Thankfully, they did. Thanks No7.

I went for a natural, toned look and applied the lipstick myself, the photo was taken after I returned from the Prom (no re-applications). Light brown eyeshadow to define my eyelids and no eyeliner, just mascara.

Weekly Edit: Summer Shoes Wishlist

Summer seems to have well and truly started, here in England. This morning (or afternoon, I didn't check), I was gladly surprised with a few tickets to attend the Henley Royal Regatta festivities. So I have been researching it for just about the whole day. I've been slacking on the blog lately, which is really bad, but my exams are finally over and I have been de-stressing myself by watching movies at home with my mum. So for this week's edit, I compiled a small list of footwear that I've been not-so-silently coveting for this year's heat wave (I'm being hopeful).

Since Milan, I've wanted to start a mini collezione of court heels in; black, nude and tan non-patent leather.

The heel elongates your legs but still provides comfort, and the gold embellishments give them an edge.

I saw these during Spring and it's still not in my price range, but it doesn't hurt to look. The straight edge at the top, is what draws me in.

Marlow Town Regatta: Jewellery Inspiration

If you hadn't noticed my absence on the blog on Saturday, let me fill you in on what I was up to.

Let's start with the event, Marlow Town Regatta, I've been wanting to go since I became aware of social activities (which was somewhere during my mid-teen phase). Whenever my family and I would take strolls along the Marlow riverside in the summer, I would always remember the banners for the regatta strewn across the streets. Thanks to my mum, I got a ride and ticket with my neighbour to this year's event. To say the least, it was amazing.

Sipping some Prosecco, as I watched flurries of knee-length tea dresses, full skirts and flowing slips, pass me by. The gentlemen were impeccably suited; I noticed a trend of dark navy blazers over an ironed white dress shirt, which in turn was tucked into a pair of maroon pressed trousers (perhaps it was a uniform?).

Whilst conversing with new friends, we came upon the topic of jobs we all held (I opted for student fashion blogger), one of them worked for a jewellery company whose products she got to wear (first photo). I love the daintiness and delicate feel of the bracelets, and the rose gold picked out the lovely tan she had.

The metallic rosy hue of the clutch, complement the bracelets perfectly.

I was also captivated by the statement necklace worn on a lady (whose name I did not catch), who came to inform us that they (@AjoureLondon) was selling Zara jewellery at half the retail price. Just putting it out here, I love Zara, the quality and style of their products is a standard I try to keep. So I was silently bursting to have a browse.

When we arrived at the stall, I was truly mesmerized by the amount of jewels and chains on display. I hadn't purchased anything as I was indecisive about it, but at the least I have a rough image of what I want. High street here I come.

Weekly Edit: Boxy & White

Going through a Vogue issue from earlier in the year, provides a lot of inspiration for future purchases and DIY ideas. Picking out three pages from a pile of influences, I decide to pin them to my new inspo-board (at least until I figure out whether or not I want an inspiration gallery above my computer).

One of many pieces I've been coveting is a boxy top, one without a feminine silhouette but still exudes a sense of allure (like this CADET JACKET from 3.1 Phillip Lim). Along with this, is the colour (or lack thereof) white, which has been my favourite tone in just about everything. My room, furniture, etc. The word boring came to many minds, when I mentioned choosing white as the new colour for my walls. Nonetheless, my decision never wavered and guess what? My room is now white and I am still very much in love with it (I just lean on my door frame, study my room and sigh dreamily). Ok, back to the edit.

I'm not sure if you have noticed, but pleats are in. After seeing this pleated skirt from Filles à Papa, I've been searching for the perfect fabric to make my own. I love the combination of black vs white, and the pleats give the skirt a uniform flow, streamlining the silhouette but still allowing movement. Plus, the mid-thigh high slit elongates your legs and keeps them cool from the summer heat.

Note the three filles en blanc? The composition of the models and the outfits, feels light and airy. A breath of fresh air from the bombard of tanned skin and colourful prints I've been spotting lately. The simplistic forms and monotone palette, clears one's mind. One thing I'm not quite taken with here, has to be the head scarf. I don't think I'm going to find myself with one anytime soon, at least not when it's tied under the chin (I have no urge to shorten my neck by 50% visually).

Weekly Edit: Milan in under a week - Part 2

As promised last week, here's what I bought whilst in Milan, plus something from Bellagio, a charming little place within Como (a province in Italy, with a gorgeous lake).

When I spotted Bershka in Corso Vittorio Emanuele, I ran for it (no kidding, I actually did). Thank goodness for block heels and flat pavements. The store was massive and I probably would not have found my way out if I didn't have a checklist of pieces my wardrobe needed. Even then, it still took some time to figure out which ones from my list I wanted to buy from here. This is where my ever helpful mum came in. After searching half the store for me, she showed me this particular pair of imitation leather shorts. I just about fell in love with it at first sight (the checklist? Well, I did note down shorts..although it was meant to be tailored).

This wrap skirt is the inspiration for my Tartan Skirt DIY. I grabbed this as soon as I walked into Mango, it was literally a beeline. I was skeptical about the fit around the waist as the skirts from stores like Mango and Zara, tend to gape at the back for me. Thankfully, it fitted like a charm. It's so versatile and I can dress it up with a vintage lace top or down with a simple tee. Apparently the skirt's sold out on their site, so I''m glad I bagged it in person. The asymmetrical hemline adds an attractive feature and the angle slims down the legs. You have to wear a pair of lingerie shorts like these underneath though, to avoid any VPLs.

After almost a couple of months coveting Angelina Jolie's BAFTA heels, I finally got a pair of courts in black leather (come on, you have to get at least one leather item from Italy), from H&M. Although I would have loved to have gotten a pair of Italian leather shoes, these were made in India (still exotic, none the less). I had just about given up looking for leather heels like these, until I walked into H&M. My eyes just zoned in automatically when I saw these. I am so glad I didn't slim down my specifications of; real non-patent leather, pointed heel, comfortable height and a good price.
The pair I bought was the last one in my size (top tip: when buying high heels, buy a size smaller to prevent your foot slipping in the shoe), unfortunately it had annoyingly visible mark on the front of the shoe. I can tell you that I was not willing to let go of it that easily (the mark could be easily covered with some leather polish, but for that price?). A friendly negotiation with a shop assistant later, and €5 came off the price (it might not seem like much, but that was the silver lining in my cloud). I bought it, no surprise here. (Another tip: don't be afraid to haggle or compromise.)

You saw that €N/A? Yeah, well I'm not telling. It's a secret. Let's just leave it at the fact that I bought it in Milan. The size is slightly too big to sit on my waist, so it rests on my hips. The belt loops make it possible to bring it up to my waist with a belt. I love the pattern and deep blue colour of the trousers. I have actually folded the hems up in the photo, the strip of navy blue is actually the binding of the hems. I was even more convinced to buy this, when a lady next to me said "molto bene" repeatedly (nope she wasn't the shop owner. P.S. Molto bene in English is "very good"). I have worn this multiple times already, craving its presence when it's in the wash. My favourite outfit with this is with a crop top, heels and a blazer (cue the compliments).

This has to be one of the coolest bags around. At 45 Euros, even better. This was the "something" I bought from Bellagio. It trumps a lot of the bags I already own, because as you can see, it can transform from a backpack into a tote and then a handbag. It basically eliminates the need for two other types of bags. You can only see one ring from the pictures but, there are four metal rings that the handles can detach and attach to, to determine the length. This was from a little boutique (the shop owner claimed to have designed it herself), so I have had trouble finding similar styles online. Better luck finding it in Italy yourself. There were a selection of colours and textures, I narrowed it down to choosing between a smooth tan leather version and this hand-stamped ostrich leather effect on cow leather. I wanted white because it felt more me and it just looked intriguing (that and my minimalistic craze).

Weekly Edit: Milan in under a week - Part 1

During the Easter holidays, I could finally tick Milan off my list of places to visit. Stepping off the plane into 24°C, was definitely a good start and a great change from the dreary rain back in England. We (I went with my parents) was quite skeptical at first about getting around, since I didn't know much Italian, but the people there are ever so friendly and won't mind stopping to help.

Another thing I love about Milan, is the public transport. It's confusing the first few times (we took a couple of wrong turns and couldn't find the tram), but we got the hang of it by mid-week. It's also super affordable, the tram tickets cost €4.50 for a whole day.
Tip: Don't forget to stamp your tickets via an orange box / contraption when you get on any public transport other than taxis, tickets get checked at random times and you'll be fined if you haven't.

Duomo di Milano

When in Milan, I'll suggest having a look around the inside of the Duomo (Cathedral in Italian), although I prefer the Notre Dame, it's still an amazing piece of architecture. If you have time, check out the roof of the Duomo. You have the option of taking the stairs (cheaper but tiring) or pay more to use the lift. I don't think I've ever felt as unfit whilst scaling those steps.

Searching for a café.

Deciding that we earned a well-deserved treat, we stopped for some lunch at Le Tre Gazzelle in Corso Vittorio Emanuele II. You need to try the gelato in this place, we had pineapple and vanilla together (my taste buds were in paradise). Look for Caffè freddo (it's iced coffee) in the menu too. Even I liked it, Italian coffee seems to be sweeter.

sitting in a neat row. There was a lot more you couldn't see (I was too stunned by the choices to stop
and take a picture).
